Flight of the Monarch: Acclaimed Epic “Monarch: The Mexican-American Musical” Set as Off-Broadway Centerpiece for MITF 2026

The New York independent theatre landscape is bracing for a summer renaissance of unprecedented proportions. John Chatterton, a foundational trailblazer of the off-off-Broadway movement, has officially announced the grand return of the Midtown International Theatre Festival (MITF) from June 15 through July 26, 2026. This relaunch marks the return of a true “Festival Giant” after a nearly decade-long hiatus.

To spearhead this historic undertaking, Chatterton has partnered with Jay Michaels Global Communications (JMGC) to manage promotion, brand strategy, and press visibility. Operating out of the historic three-theatre complex at the American Theatre of Actors (ATA)—which is concurrently celebrating its landmark 50th anniversary—MITF 2026 is positioning itself as a massive, multi-stage hub of creative innovation.

Among a diverse lineup spanning full-length plays, solo acts, and short play labs, festival producers have tapped a bold, politically urgent masterpiece to serve as a featured anchor of the season: Monarch: The Mexican-American Musical. Created by the internationally recognized duo of Alfonso Molina and Mayu Molina Lehmann, the production arrives in Manhattan riding a wave of West Coast acclaim, including a critically lauded run at the Los Angeles Theater Center where the Los Angeles Times named it the “#1 recommendation of the weekend.”

A Modern-Day Les Misérables on the Borderline

Styled by its creators as an epic Mexican-American counter-narrative, Monarch addresses a glaring void in the contemporary theatrical canon by focusing specifically and unyieldingly on the Mexican-American immigrant experience.

The production draws deliberate, powerful parallels to Victor Hugo’s 19th-century masterpiece, Les Misérables, mapping its timeless archetypes directly onto the modern undocumented experience:

  • The Marginalized Fugitive (Luis): Played out as a modern-day Jean Valjean. Luis is a beloved handyman who has spent 20 years quietly building a life and contributing to his American community. Yet, because he lacks documentation, he is legally branded a perpetual criminal—forced to live in the shadows for a single crossing, much like Valjean fleeing the stigma of a stolen loaf of bread.
  • The Unyielding Enforcer (Officer Castelo): An ICE agent who embodies the rigid, uncompromised legalism of Inspector Javert. Castelo possesses a completely inflexible view of the law, utterly devoid of mercy or the belief in immigrant redemption. In a striking ideological clash, Castelo views undocumented immigrants as mere “crawling bugs,” explicitly denying their capacity to transform into something beautiful.

“Because undocumented people are so often criminalized in the media, we wanted to craft a counter-narrative—a dignified look at the lives of people in the shadows,” state co-creators Alfonso Molina and Mayu Molina Lehmann.

Searing Thriller Meets Spiritual Journey

The plot kicks into high gear as Luis is relentlessly pursued by ICE, ultimately seeking sanctuary within the walls of a local church. This narrative choice places Monarch at the bleeding edge of current human rights and faith-based immigration debates, establishing the church not merely as a physical shelter, but as a bastion of a “higher law” that commands communities to welcome the stranger and protect human dignity above state mandates.

Inside this refuge, Luis’s terrifying cat-and-mouse ordeal transforms into an emotional and spiritual retrospective. The sanctuary reminds him of his youth working as a guide at a Monarch butterfly sanctuary in Mexico, the very place he met his wife decades earlier.

The high-stakes tension of this pursuit is beautifully mapped out through an intricate, genre-defying musical score composed by Alfonso Molina. The music acts as an emotional barometer, utilizing distinct tonal frameworks to delineate the ideological warfare at play.

As the narrative reaches its darkest valley, the ensemble shifts into an ancient Greek-style chorus, chanting a collective song of mortality set to a traditional Mexican Huapango rhythm in C-sharp minor. When love and redemption ultimately prevail, the score bursts back into the light, utilizing magical Lydian modes to mirror the triumphant migration of the Monarch butterfly.

The Prestige Behind the Curtain

The creative minds debuting this work bring immense international pedigree and institutional authority to the Midtown International Theatre Festival stage:

  • Alfonso Molina (Composer/Co-Bookwriter): A highly decorated Mexican composer recognized by ASCAP and the Sundance Film Festival. Holding a Doctorate in Musical Arts, Molina’s orchestral and operatic works have been performed worldwide, spanning from Spain to the Czech Republic.
  • Mayu Molina Lehmann (Bookwriter & Lyricist): A trilingual author, librettist, and fierce human rights activist. Her extensive professional background working within the Organization of American States (OAS) and various immigrant rights advocacy groups infuses the musical’s text with profound legal authenticity, real-world stakes, and genuine heart.

An Immigrant Epic for the Ultimate Immigrant City

For a production carrying a Helen Hayes Award recommendation, choosing the historic relaunch of the MITF for its official New York Off-Broadway debut was a deeply intentional, symbolic decision.

New York City is the quintessential global melting pot, built entirely on the backs of immigrant labor. By positioning Monarch in the heart of midtown Manhattan, the production forcefully places the essential, yet all-too-often invisible worker onto center stage in a metropolis that literally could not function without them. Furthermore, the show proudly joins New York’s storied legacy of radical protest theater—following in the giant footsteps of socially conscious epics like West Side Story, RENT, and In the Heights.

“To have a work of this scale and social importance anchor our comeback season is a monumental moment for the festival,” noted the MITF executive team. “Alfonso and Mayu have created a musical that is as soaring as the Monarch itself, perfectly fitting the creative innovation we are fostering at the ATA.”
