A SYMPHONY FOR PORTLAND: Angela Theresa Egic

Interview by Jen Bush

Angela Theresa Egic is the production stage manager for a thrilling new musical, A Symphony for Portland.  Being an actor as well as a stage manager, she brings a unique perspective to the position.  She has lovingly devoted her life to the arts.  “Basically, my entire being is an artist! I call myself a Renaissance Woman.”

Ms. Egic was drawn to this production for multiple reasons.  “I Did not know the play when I applied, just saw the Facebook call for a Stage Manager and it had two or three things I wanted: 1) A theatre gig; 2) a paying gig [in theatre] and 3) a good reason to quit the non-theatre day (although mine was night) job.”

When a show has serious subject matter, it’s the responsibility of the artists to try to convey that information in a sensitive manner.  Ms. Egic feels that responsibility extends to every aspect of the production. “Every show has a responsibility to the cast, audience, writer, and theater.”

Though Covid is not over, Ms. Egic feels positive about the return of the performing arts.  With health and safety protocols in place, it feels right.  “I love theatre! I prefer it’s safe but it gives me reason to continue to live (and stay as safe as possible) and continue to live a quality life. Depression and other mental health issuescan really mess up people when we stop living our bliss. At least, for me. I feel be careful, always but life must continue.”

Everybody has ideas and hopes for what theatre will look like post-covid.  Ms. Egic is longing for the social interactions among cast and crew.  Seeing people outside of the work environment in any profession can be a fun way to get to know the person behind the position.  “It should remain important, maybe even more, as some people love sports while others of us live for the arts! It makes life worth living for me. I, for one, miss the “family” theatre often provided. You know, going to the diner after rehearsals. Of course, I understand many places are no longer open and it may still be unsafe. I just miss that part. I hope at some point, some of that comes back.”

Ms. Egic will be giving her regards to Broadway because that’s where she’s headed next.  There could also be some very exciting work-related travel in her near future.  This Renaissance woman has a lot to offer the performing arts world, especially the theatre!  “Broadway is next! I am up for some roles in films that are on location. I do love traveling (for pay) and doing it via my acting career. Theatre will always be the love of my life … so, film or tv is great; yet I will always return to theatre.”
