Romeo and Juliet Review

I know the trend these days is to tweak Shakespeare by putting it in modern costumes or set it in a more contemporary setting, or even perform it drunk, but for my money you can not go past setting it in the time and place that it was written. If the language is from a certain time how can
you go wrong with setting it at the same time, you can’t. I mean do we really need to see cowboy Macbeth? So I was so happy to see traditional dress and costumes when I saw Romeo and Juliet. That simple choice alone let me know I would enjoy this production and I did. Across the board the actors did a great job embodying their characters. A stand out was the on stage dynamics between Romeo and Juliet, the actors had great chemistry, and I especially liked Parmeet
Singh (Romeo) who had great stage presence and energy.
The predominantly bare stage was made up for with an interesting ornate backdrop, but the cart
that was moved around from scene to scene was sometimes a little distracting. The use of light
was very minimal and although it was used beautifully towards the end of the play I felt like it
could have been used more creatively through the production. I think the cast did a great job
overall and would recommend this production to friends, a very accessible version of Romeo
and Juliet.
