Tuesday, January 14 · 7:30 – 8:30pm EST at The Drama Book Shop, 266 West 39th Street New York City

When JJ sees his Uncle Rolando on TV, he declares, “I want to be an actor, too!” Tio Rolando soon arrives and the whole family joins in the fun of helping JJ make his first audition self-tape! There’s so much to learn—headshots, backdrops, lighting and lines—but his uncle is there to guide JJ (and you, the reader) through each step. When the audition tape is finished, JJ excitedly sends it and headshots to a casting director for a role in a short film. He nervously waits for a phone call. Will JJ get the role and become a real actor like his Tio Rolando?

We met with Javier to pick his brain about sharing the arts with the next generation.

What Does “Storytelling” Mean to You?

For me, storytelling is at the core of everything I do. Whether I’m performing, teaching, or writing, it’s about connecting with others through authentic narratives. It’s the art of bringing characters and stories to life, creating moments that resonate across backgrounds and experiences. Storytelling inspires, educates, and entertains—whether I’m on stage, on film, in the classroom, or at home, persuading my kids to eat their vegetables.

Working With Young Students

When working with young students, I’ve found that their attitudes toward the arts vary. Some are enthusiastic “theater kids,” ready to dive in. In contrast, others may come from communities where performing arts programs are scarce. My focus is on meeting them where they are, using a play-focused approach centered on comedy and entertainment to break the ice.

A common misconception I see—both in kids and adults—is that good actors are never nervous when speaking in front of others. I teach students to embrace their fear and channel that energy into their performances. This takes practice, but it’s a skill that grows stronger with time.

What Questions Do Students Ask Most Often?

The first questions I usually get are about my roles—boys want to know about Venom, and girls are curious about Outer Banks. The real question surfaces once we move past my credits: “How can I do what you do?”I love this question because it reflects their eagerness to learn. My advice is always the same: focus on dedication, continuous learning, and resilience. Hone your craft, seek diverse experiences, and stay persistent. I also remind them to be kind—it’s a people-driven industry, and relationships matter.

What’s the Biggest Challenge You Face?

The biggest challenge I’ve faced isn’t external—it’s internal. Acting is one of the few careers children can actually pursue and earn a living doing. While it can be rewarding, it also comes with immense pressure as well as opportunities for things to go wrong. So, why encourage kids to act?

Because children deserve representation in TV and film. Period. They deserve protection and nurturing. That means providing resources for the adults in their personal and professional lives. I created an evolving website to complement my book, www.explorethespark.com. It provides families with additional resources to guide young creatives toward long, healthy, and successful careers in the arts. I am an advocate for children on set. Things often move at such a rapid pace on set that things can fall between the cracks. A little training and a lot of transparency will go a long way. With the proper training (such as the one offered by Alyson Stoner for productions), informed production teams, and supportive families, young actors can thrive in a healthy environment.

What’s Next for You?

Acting for TV & FilmI’m continuing to audition and take on exciting roles. You can check out my latest work on my IMDb page, including commercials currently airing and an upcoming spot with Shaquille O’Neal, which is set to release this spring.Educational Workshops & Speaking EngagementsOn January 14, 2025, I’ll be at The Drama Book Shop in NYC with Denise Santos. We’ll host an event to help aspiring actors navigate auditions and the industry. In the months to come, I am also scheduled to speak at other academic settings and bookstores. My website, www.explorethespark.com, will announce more events. Ongoing ProjectsI’m currently filming a web series starring talented young adults in Atlanta. It’s my way of paying it forward. The first episode will launch in February 2025. Follow me on social media for updates on this and other projects. I’m excited about these opportunities and look forward to inspiring others through my work in the arts and education.
