Kaitlyn Clark talks about RADIANT VERMIN

Radiant Vermin: A Dark Comedy with a Purpose at the Sargent Theatre

The American Theatre of Actors (314 W. 54th Street) will host the compelling production “Radiant Vermin” from June 19th to June 30th in their Sargent Theatre! Performances will run Wednesday to Saturday at 8pm, and matinee shows are scheduled for Saturdays at 2pm and Sundays at 3pm. Tickets are available for purchase at The ATA Website and Ripple Effect Artists.

“Radiant Vermin” is the newest dark comedy written by Philip Ridley and delves into the intricacies of the housing market, inequality, and homelessness. The story follows a young couple who, in their pursuit of the perfect home, encounter an enigmatic stranger offering them a bargain that may be too good to be true. Directed by Kimberly Loren Eaton, the play presents a narrative that is both entertaining and thought-provoking.

Kimberly Loren Eaton, with her extensive background in theatre, brings a unique vision to this production. Having worked on Broadway hits like “Fun Home,” Eaton was drawn to Ridley’s script for its satirical humor and thoughtful message delivery. She is hoping to ensure the production resonates with New Yorkers by grounding the narrative in modern urban America. By setting the play in 2024, and avoiding British accents, Eaton hopes to reflect ongoing social issues in a way that feels relevant to her audience.

Eaton explains, “Philip Ridley has a brilliant, irreverent sense of humor. Radiant Vermin is a play with a message delivered through a wild, hilarious ride.” She elaborates on the thematic relevance, stating, “We’re facing a homelessness and affordable housing crisis here. Setting the play in NYC makes it relevant and specific to our audience.” Eaton also highlights the decision to “queer the play,” by incorporating themes of transformation and duality; a decision she made upon discovering that almost a third of LGBTQ+ youth face homelessness in their lives.

The cast of “Radiant Vermin” features Matt Braddak as Ollie, Mimi Brill as Jill, and Mejiah as Miss Dee. Each actor brings a unique perspective and depth to their roles. Matt Braddak was drawn to the production by its complex story and the positive energy of the production team. He finds Ollie a fascinating character and says he embodies both the brightest and darkest sides of human nature. Braddak also notes the challenges of the role, especially the rapid character development, which has been both exciting and daunting.

Mimi Brill was attracted to the mix of dark comedy and strong social commentary in “Radiant Vermin.” She appreciates Ridley’s writing for its ability to provoke thought while entertaining, and she is excited to portray Jill’s complex moral transformation. Brill finds the stamina required for a three-person play and the fast-paced dialogue both challenging and rewarding.

Mejiah, making their debut with Ripple Effect Artists, connects deeply with the roles of Miss Dee and Kay. They were drawn to the avant-garde, whimsical nature of the show and its important message. For Mejiah, portraying Kay, a character with whom they share personal experiences of homelessness, is particularly meaningful.

With such compelling social issues as the central theme of this play, it felt appropriate to ensure the impact of this show was used for good. For this reason, Ripple Effect Artists is partnering with The Bowery Mission, an organization dedicated to helping New York’s homeless since the 1870s. This collaboration includes panel discussions aimed at raising awareness and support for those affected by homelessness. Eaton emphasizes the importance of this partnership, stating that “The Bowery Mission provides tangible help, in the form of hot meals, clothing, overnight, safe shelter, and partnering clients with social workers to come up with individualized action plans.”

“Radiant Vermin” is not just a play; it is a call to action. Ripple Effect Artists, Inc. (REA) uses art to address social injustice and inspire action. The entire team works together to bring Ridley’s vision to life in a way that is both engaging and impactful. This show promises to be a must-see production that blends humor with critical social issues, offering a unique theatrical experience. Don’t miss this opportunity to engage with a play that challenges perceptions and inspires action. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit The ATA Website or Ripple Effect Artists.
