What brings you back to Adelaide for the Fringe 2024 after your successful season in 2023?
After the incredible reception of my show, “Chansons: Piaf, Brel & Me – A Musical Cabaret about France” at the Adelaide Fringe 2023, I was asked to come back to the beautiful Adelaide Town Hall. The warm welcome and appreciation from the audience, along with the collaboration with The Garage International, made the decision to return an easy one.
What makes performing “Chansons” so special for you and the audience?
“Chansons” is not just a performance; it’s an intimate journey through the heart of French culture. The songs and stories serve as a mirror reflecting our own cultures, fostering a deeper understanding of how we live together. Audiences have shared experiencing goosebumps, tears and smiling, connecting with the profound impact of the show.
Why do you love French music and singers such as Piaf & Brel?
I am drawn to French music, particularly from iconic singers like Piaf and Brel, because it resonates with my voice and my style. The intense storytelling, coupled with strong and melancholic melodies, impassion me. The expressive and passionate nature of the words and melodies, along with the fun elements, captivate me. What I truly love is the profound meaningfulness embedded in these songs, some of which have become global successes. I find joy in creating various vocal nuances, transitioning from soft and dreamy tones to strong and expressive ones, incorporating talkative and joyful elements. Acting out the emotions and infusing humor adds another layer to the performance. Singing to subtle virtuous piano accompaniment creates a highly personal cabaret experience. This synergy provides the freedom to explore fermates, accelerations, and unexpected stops in the music, contributing to the rich and dynamic storytelling in my performances.
What makes your show Chansons: Piaf, Brel & Me so unique?
My show, Chansons: Piaf, Brel & Me, is a tapestry of unique experiences. Audiences describe it as a journey that elicits smiles and tears, an unexpected and beautifully pleasurable cultural joy. They say that I craft an atmosphere that is simultaneously moving, nostalgic, and electric, creating an emotional resonance that lingers. It goes beyond mere entertainment – it’s an educational musical tour. You visit France through its songs and reflect yourself through them. I invite my audience to immerse themselves in the rich cultural tapestry that these melodies and my storytelling offer. Chansons is more than a performance; it’s a transformative experience that leaves an indelible mark on those who embark on this musical exploration.
Who would be most interested in your artistry and your shows?
My artistry and shows cater to a diverse range of audiences and clients, owing to my trilingual proficiency in English, French, and German. This linguistic versatility opens up numerous international performance opportunities. Venues like French restaurants, cabarets, theatres, town halls, and even cruise ships have welcomed my performances for international audiences. My shows also resonate with International Associations, French Alliances, Institut Francais, Embassies, English-French groups, German-French groups, Goethe Institute, and International Companies. If you’re seeking a multicultural and deeply meaningful musical experience, where you can choose from any of the three languages I speak, booking one of my shows guarantees a memorable, heart-touching and profound musical journey.
What’s new about your cabaret performance this time?
I’ve made some adjustments to songs and texts, introducing an accordion player to enhance the musical experience. In my longer 90 minute version I also feature sections of French classical music, magic, and stories about Christmas. While I’ve used images of France being projected on big screens past shows, in Adelaide, the focus will be on the intimacy of a live performance. The show will run for 60 minutes.
Didn’t you just win awards for Chansons – Piaf, Brel & Me?
Yes, indeed! I’ve recently achieved remarkable success, winning a total of six awards closely tied to my captivating show, “Chansons: Piaf, Brel & Me.” These accolades include three first prizes for Chansons, World Music, and Best Lyrics. Additionally, I secured second prizes for Best Composer and in the main category Best Singer Price 2023 as Best Solo Singer, along with a third prize for Best Singer Songwriter. This recognition adds to the excitement and anticipation surrounding my upcoming performances, especially at the Adelaide Fringe 2024.
You’ve had an eventful years across the world. Can you share some highlights?
Certainly! In 2022, I had the pleasure of performing in Berlin and at the Edinburgh Fringe. The following year, 2023, marked my first visit to Australia and an unforgettable cruise to Greenland. Singing amidst glaciers and picturesque villages during the cruise was a surreal experience, and the warm reception of “Chansons” was genuinely heartwarming.
Any future plans?
Absolutely, I have a couple of wishes on my radar. Firstly, I would love to collaborate with a label that specializes in my genres, allowing me to record and share my songs in a way that resonates with the essence of my music and my audiences. The idea of creating cross-over art is particularly exciting, bridging different genres to bring a unique and eclectic flavor to my work. Looking ahead to 2025, I am eager to forge new and exciting contacts and connections. Building meaningful relationships in the industry opens up possibilities for diverse collaborations, performances, and opportunities. It’s a thrilling prospect to explore fresh avenues and expand my artistic horizons in the coming year.
What’s next for you as such an award-winning singer, Stefanie Rummel?
I’m diving into the next chapter! Catch me on stages at town halls, exploring artistic venues at a Rome conference, and serenading the seas with solo shows on cruise ships. Festivals are on my radar, promising a vibrant musical journey. But that’s not all – the thrill extends beyond the spotlight.
